Franchising Questions and Answers
Answer:
Franchising, or Business Format Franchising, is the granting of a license by one person (the franchisor) to another (the franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to trade under the trade mark/trade name of the franchisor and to make use of an entire package, comprising all the elements necessary to establish a previously untrained person in the business and to run it with continual assistance on a predetermined basis (British Franchise Association).
A franchise instantly provides entrepreneurs with something that they could spend years trying to establish on their own – an effective brand, product/service and business strategy – the complete package.
According to Business Link, franchising now accounts for £9.3 billion of business turnover in the UK. "There are currently more than 700 businesses in the UK being run as franchises and, with a wide variety of types of businesses, there is something for everyone," Jonathan Sharp, business adviser for Business Link.
People from all walks of life choose to run their own franchises and for a variety of reasons. Some are disillusioned with the corporate life, but most simply want to be their own boss and make money for themselves.
Answer:
Franchising is an excellent way of entering self employment and enjoying many of the benefits of being your own boss whilst reducing the risks involved in going it alone.
- You own your individual operation but benefit from a recognizable brand name and associated services.
- Franchising offers a business format and services which have already been market tested and found to work. The risk of your business failing is greatly reduced.
- The franchise ‘package' you receive at the outset includes an operations manual, marketing strategy and administrative procedures. You will not have to spend time or money developing these yourself through trial and error. You will also receive practical help setting up your operation, meaning you avoid many of the ‘teething' problems suffered by people when starting a business from scratch.
- Your business will benefit from national online promotional activity which is beyond the reach of most start-up businesses.
The success rate of franchise businesses speaks for itself – 600,000 businesses start up in the UK each year, of which one fifth of theses will cease trading in the first 12 months. In comparison, franchised firms have a success rate of 90 per cent – and that’s after 5 years of trading (New Business Magazine, Sept 04).
Answer:
The Franchisee pays an initial fee to the Franchisor at the outset, together with an on-going service fee calculated as a percentage of monthly turnover.
The initial fee is the "purchase price" of the franchise. In return for this, you get a license to trade using the Franchisors business format, trade marks and operations manual. Essentially, you are buying the know-how which has taken months or years to develop, not to mention the development costs.
The monthly service fee covers ongoing training, product/service development, national promotional activities, administrative support and business advice.
